There’s Still a Song in Me

Finding Purpose When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned

By Jimmy Adams

I dropped out of school in the ninth grade. I wanted to pursue a dream that would change my life for the better. I wanted to do something I loved. And I loved singing.

But loving something and being good at it are two different things. I never really felt like I was ever that good. I believe there has to be passion, because without passion nothing really matters as much.

I was making progress. I had a deal with a Warner Brothers producer to start a record. But I wasn’t happy. I felt lonely. Even with that opportunity in front of me, I wasn’t feeling a sense of accomplishment. My mind was somewhere else.

I was told that if I broke the contract, I couldn’t come back. But my sister had run away and was in a bad relationship. I left to help her, and that meant walking away from the music opportunity.

If you asked me what I would tell that younger version of myself today, my answer would be nothing.

I wouldn’t change a thing.

You see, what I never realized was that my true voice comes from love. Looking back, I don’t think I was meant to sing in a way that would have steered my life in another direction. Because then I wouldn’t have the wonderful life I’m thankful for today.

When I think about my wife and kids, I really want to sing again. I want to tell them how much joy they bring me and how special they are to me.

I’ve always loved ballads. The words, the emotion in the singer’s voice, and who the song makes me think of. And great music comes from great vibes. When the beat is right, it makes music for the soul!

These are the kinds of things I’m learning to express through The Pieces That Made Me Whole. The challenges, the self-doubt, and the love I feel for the life I have today.

I’m still learning. And there’s always a song left in me somewhere.
